World's Top ten Paints Companies 2014 Annual Report

(Published by WPCIA January 5, 2015 Washington)

Due to the huge demand in the construction industry, the global paints and coatings market is still growing. In 2014, sales of global paints increased 3.9%, reached to 43.38 million tons, with total sales of 85 billion pounds, about $ 132.3 billion. Regarding paint sales in 2014, architectural coatings industry sales is 21.69 million tons, account for 50% of sales amount, annual sales is $63.504 billion, accounted for 48% of total sales; industrial coating is 12.58 million tons, accounts for 29% of total sales, annual sales is $33.075 billion accounted for 25% of total sales. There were 14 companies with coating sales in excess of $1 billion in 2014; three companies had sales over $10 billion.

Paint and coatings market has been able to become more mature and grow rapidly, this mainly because of paint and coatings industry recovery from the 2008-2009 global recession, and a 5% average annual rate of growth is forecast through 201. This modest rate of advance is being propelled largely by the strong growth in the emerging economies of the Asia-Pacific region. Consumption in Asia-Pacific, particularly China and India, has surged and is up by about 50% in pounds from 2008.

The paints and coatings industry can be categorized into three markets: architectural/decorative, industrial OEM and special purpose coatings. Architectural coating is the largest segment followed by industrial coatings and special purpose coatings. The industrial coatings segment was driven by rise in industrial production and automotive OEM sector.

Geographically, Asia Pacific is still the largest consumer of paints and coatings, followed by Europe, North America and Latin America. In 2014, sales of the Asia-Pacific region account for 47%, as the largest in global painting sales. In Asia- Pacific region, sales of China is the largest, accounted for 58% of the Asia-Pacific coatings market, India accounted for 13%; Europe is the second largest paint consumption areas, accounting for 24% of total global sales. A mature 2% annual rate is forecast, with growth in Russia, Turkey and other Eastern European countries expanding faster. The usage amount of paint in North America accounted for 18%, and Latin America accounted for 6%.

Paint manufacturers are constantly introducing new and technologically advanced products in the market, and formulating products for specific customer applications, meeting customer delivery requirements and providing technical assistance to the customer in product application, new technology offerings and prices. Include Diamond Paints, PPG, SACAL and Sherwin-Williams are the leading companies. Companies are focusing on zero VOC (volatile organic compounds) and green paints that are particularly in high demand among the customers.

Demand, for paints and coatings, was highest from residential buildings, accounting for around 33.1% of the global demand in 2014. In 2014, increasing application scope of green coatings and nanocoatings market coupled with growing Middle East and North Africa paints and coatings market are expected to open opportunities for the growth of the market over the next few years.

Waterborne coatings are the most used paints and coatings across various end-users, were the major consumed paints and coatings in the market in 2014 and accounted for about 40% of the global demand. Solvent borne technologies were the second largest consumed paints and coatings in the market. They are expected to show decline within the forecast period owing to the environmental regulations associated with the VOCs. Powder coatings are expected to be the fastest growing over the forecast period due to rising demand from automotive, electronics and construction. Demand for other paints and coatings such as specialty coatings are likely to be steady due to a substantially higher demand from other paints and coatings in the near future.
